Where cold photons are counted
Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) and related superconducting detectors are the highest-performance photon counters ever built — and every field that uses them is scaling to more channels:
- Quantum communication & networking — multi-user QKD and quantum network nodes multiply detector counts per node.
- Photonic quantum computing — photon-number resolution is won by multiplexing, which means many detectors per optical mode.
- Astronomy & deep-space optical communication — kilopixel-class superconducting cameras and photon-starved links.
- Fundamental physics — dark-matter searches, particle detection, precision timing.
- Life-science imaging — fluorescence lifetime imaging and other time-resolved methods.
In each, the readout — not the detector — is becoming the constraint on channel count, system cost, and cryogenic heat budget. That is the problem we build for.
